Cieslak back

The Bills re-signed tight end Brad Cieslak on Tuesday, according to the team's official website. The team lost rookie Derek Schouman to injured reserve last week and depth option Matt Murphy sufferd a torn calf muscle late last week as well, so Cieslak – who has been with the off and on for the last two years – may see some action in the backup fullback/h-back role behind starter Ryan Neufeld.

Losman could keep job

Head coach Dick Jauron admitted Wednesday that J.P. Losman's solid performance against the Bengals a week ago played a part in his decision to start Losman again in Week 10, and he hinted that Losman will continue to start as long as he continues to play well. "I think we'll just keep moving along here and hopefully we won't change a lot," Jauron told the team's official website. "But we don't know… Again, it's not like we're looking for a quarterback. We feel like we have at least two that we think can play and hopefully win in this league." Rookie Trent Edwards' injured wrist is healed to the point where he could serve as the backup on Sunday in Miami, but it appears Losman will be given another chance to keep the job he lost due to an injury of his own earlier in the year. An offensive line that continues to jell and a bad Dolphins defense should help J.P. put up solid numbers again this week.

Losman's job in jeopardy

Predictably, speculation mounted in Buffalo on Monday that injured quarterback J.P. Losman might not regain his starting job after rookie Trent Edwards led the team to victory in his first NFL start in Week 4. When asked by the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle if he feared for his job, Losman replied, "In this league, of course… It's every player's fear to get injured and to have some kind of controversy over something like that. I don't think anyone's job on this team is secure; you have to perform week in and week out." Head coach Dick Jauron basically confirmed what Losman said, walking the fence and implying that the best player will get to play. No. 1 receiver Lee Evans backed Losman, however, and it seems likely that Losman will be able to regain his job once he returns from his sprained MCL, likely after the Bills' Week 6 bye. How long he holds the job after that, however, remains to be seen.

Three more defenders wounded

The Bills were struck by yet another rash of injuries in Week 4. According to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, safety Jim Leonhard (calf), cornerback Ashton Youboty (ankle), and linebacker Kevin Harrison (knee) all suffered injuries that will likely keep them out of next Monday's contest. Leonhard and Youboty aren't expected to be out long-term, but Harrison is out for the season. Harrison's injury is the easiest to absorb, as either Keith Ellison (high ankle sprain) or Coy Wire (sprained knee) might be able to return to action this week. Jabari Greer will step in for Youboty at cornerback and recently signed veteran Bryan Scott will likely fill in for Leonhard. Something tells us Tony Romo and the Cowboys will have some fun against the Bills' third-stringers on Monday night.

McGee should be ready

Cornerback Terrence McGee practiced on Wednesday and should be ready to play on Sunday against the Jets, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. McGee missed Week 3 with bruised ribs, but it appears he'll be back in the lineup on Sunday. He is not only the Bills' best cornerback, but he's also a dangerous weapon in the kick return game.

Whittle placed on IR

The Bills placed offensive lineman Jason Whittle on injured reserve on Tuesday. He suffered a torn hamstring during Week 3's loss to the Patriots. nother blow to a cursed Bills squad that has already placed seven players on injured reserve this year. Whittle wasn't a key cog in the team's offense, but he was starting at right guard, where Brad Butler will now take over full-time.

Edwards to run dumbed-down offense

The Bills won't bite off more than they can chew with rookie starter Trent Edwards on Sunday, instead taking things slowly as he prepares for his first NFL start on Sunday against the Jets. "We'll get a feel for what he's comfortable with, and then we'll have to temper that because he'll tend to feel confident," head coach Dick Jauron told the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. "He can grasp a lot of concepts, but there's a difference between knowing them and executing them with the precision you need to succeed in this league." The Bills offense can't get much more basic than it already was under J.P. Losman, but Edwards should be better prepared against the Jets than he was when he was thrown into the fire in New England a week ago. The Jets rank 28th in the NFL against the pass and 27th in points allowed, but the Bills are putting up just barely 200 yards per game as it is, and we fully expect a heavy, heavy dose of running back Marshawn Lynch on Sunday.

Broken arm likely ends Posluszny's season

Rookie Paul Posluszny broke his arm during Sunday's game. Coach Dick Jauron said the linebacker likely will miss the remainder of the season, according to the Buffalo News. He's expected to require about eight weeks to heal, so the Bills appear set to place him on injured reserve to clear up a roster spot for the long haul.

McGee misses practice

Cornerback Terrence McGee did not participate in practice on Wednesday, according to the Bills injury report. He suffered bruised ribs during the Week 2 loss to the Steelers. If McGee can't play or is limited, the Bills will be down to second-stringers at three of their four secondary positions. X-rays on McGee's ribs were negative and it does not appear this is a serious injury, but a severely undermanned secondary looks like toast for Tom Brady and friends this week.

Fox added to practice squad

Free agent defensive back Dustin Fox was added to the Bills practice squad on Wednesday, according to the Bills official website. Fox was a third-round pick by the Vikings in 2005, but he hasn't panned out after missing that season with an injury. The Bills are covering their bases after a rash of injuries in their secondary.

Big plays limited

Opponents of the Bills have made a point to eliminate big plays, generally by making liberal use of the blitz and by rolling coverage to Lee Evans on deep pass routes. "When you're playing against pressure defense like we have the first two weeks you've got to make plays in the passing game and when you do you usually have big days," offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild told the team's official website. "We just haven't made enough of them." Don't count on J.P. Losman and Evans hooking up for many big plays against the stingy Patriots this week, either. Not surprisingly, neither has a good history against New England, and neither represent strong plays in Week 3.

Reed returns

Bills receiver Josh Reed was able to participate fully in Wednesday's practice despite a thigh bruise which kept him out of Week 2. Reed looks on track to return next Sunday, but the Bills offense will need more than him to solve the Patriots.

Losman accepts some blame

A day after blasting everything from the play-calling to the offensive line, J.P. Losman backed off a bit on Monday, accepting some of the blame for the Bills lackluster play on offense in the first two weeks. "I'm the first one to tell you when I did something wrong, I'm the first one to say when I've made a mistake," Losman told the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. "I'm my harshest critic." Head coach Dick Jauron added, "The blame lies in my lap and I'll take it. [Losman] needs to execute better and we need to do it around him, too." The Bills have managed only one offensive touchdown thus far, with Losman averaging a paltry 125.5 yards per game on just 23 attempts per game. Clearly, they've played it close to the vest, but they've also faced two extremely tough defenses in Denver and Pittsburgh. It won't get any easier with the Patriots in Week 3, but things should ease up a bit after that.

Youboty shaken

Bills cornerback Ashton Youboty was shaken up during today's game against the Steelers and limped off with an apparent leg injury. Youboty was starting in place of injured starter Jason Webster. The Bills secondary can ill-afford to lose anyone else, as starting safety Ko Simpson is also out. They are a prime target for opposing passing games.

Reed still unable to practice

Josh Reed again did not practice on Friday. He's listed as questionable, and it's beginning to look like his bruised thigh might keep him out of Sunday's game.

Simpson, Webster placed on IR

Injured defensive backs Ko Simpson and Jason Webster were both placed on injured reserve by the Bills on Thursday. "It's going to be tough, but the guys behind them have to step up, that's why they're in the league," safety Donte Whitner told the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. "It's not really a big dropoff, in most cases, from the first-string guy to the second-string guy." Jim Leonhard, who recorded 13 tackles and an interception last week, will step in for Simpson, but it's not as clear who will replace Webster. Ashton Youboty and Kiwaukee Thomas are in the running for playing time there, and neither is as seasoned – or good – as Webster. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger continues to lick his chops at the prospect of facing this depleted secondary on Sunday.

Reed sits with minor injury

Josh Reed didn't participate in practice on Wednesday due to a bruised thigh. Head coach Dick Jauron told the Buffalo News the ailment is minor and he expects Reed to play on Sunday against the Steelers. Reed was pretty active with four catches for 37 yards in Week 1, but he is not an impact fantasy player as the No. 3 receiver on a team that has only one actual NFL-caliber wideout.

Tight ends signed

In the wake of the catastrophic injury to backup tight end Kevin Everett, the Bills on Monday signed two veteran tight ends. According to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, Matt Murphy and Michael Gaines were both added to the roster on Monday. Murphy had been with the Bills since midway through last year before being released last Saturday. Gaines started 21 of 42 games in his first three seasons with the Panthers before reaching an injury settlement with Carolina after being placed on injured reserve last week. He has a shoulder injury but passed his physical on Monday and will likely serve as starter Robert Royal's backup as soon as he's up to speed.

Simpson leaves with fractured ankle

The Bills defense suffered several significant injuries to starters on Sunday. Free safety Ko Simpson left with a fractured ankle, outside linebacker Coy Wire tore an MCL, and cornerback Jason Webster broke a forearm, according to the Buffalo News. They already were without starting linebacker Keith Ellison, who is dealing with a high-ankle sprain, and suspended defensive end Anthony Hargrove. While this doesn't bode well for the defenses' fantasy value, it could force the offense to play catch-up.

Fowler nicked

Center Melvin Fowler limped off the field and into the locker room with an apparent ankle injury midway through practice on Tuesday. According to the Bills' official website, Fowler did not return to practice, although he said he would be fine after the workout. In part because of this scenario, Duke Preston has been getting some reps at center in recent days. Fowler remains the starter, however, and shouldn't miss much time because of this injury.
