Raiders: Russell pushed to start

Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin didn't hide the fact that quarterback JaMarcus Russell will start when he is ready. When will that be? "I won't put a ceiling on him," Kiffin tells the Oakland Tribune. "We'll push him to play for us. That may be after the bye (week, Oct. 7), that may be a year from now. We'll see. We'll see how far he can go, and he'll play when he's ready to play." Due to a roster exemption, the Raiders do not have to place Russell on the 53-man roster until September 26. Russell has missed too much time to be pushed as quickly as, for instance, Vince Young was last year. Barring injury, we don't expect to see him take over until December.
