Portis to start, split carries

Redskins running back Clinton Portis practiced on Monday, and he will start in the season opener. However, Ladell Betts will take a share of the carries. Portis missed all four preseason games due to right knee tendinitis. "He'll start off and he and Ladell will take the load," head coach Joe Gibbs tells the team's official web site. In 2006, Portis missed the final three preseason games after injuring his shoulder. He had 10 carries (and a touchdown) in the season opener against the Vikings, and Betts chipped in eight rushes. Gibbs and the Redskins will have to play it by ear in week one, and it's probably not a good sign that they are facing a good defense in the Dolphins.
