The Lions cut kick return specialist Eddie Drummond on Thursday. "It's nothing about him," head coach Rod Marinelli told the Detroit Free Press. "He's a heck of a returner. I don't want to suit up four specialists in a game. It's hard." The Lions attempted to trade Drummond before they released him.
After practice Thursday, Eddie Drummond was summoned to the Lions' front office and told he was being released. He turned in his playbook, then stopped by the coaches' offices to say good-bye.
"It's only a business, and I've got to look at it like that," Drummond said in a phone interview later in the afternoon. "It wasn't a sudden thing that just caught me off-guard. It's been a little bit up and down ever since this year started."
Drummond didn't catch on as a wide receiver in Mike Martz's offense. He should have no trouble finding a new home due to his track record as a Pro Bowl kick returner.
